Lisbon and surrounding areas
Lisboa (Lisbon), the capital of Portugal, city of seven hills it’s a city of many contrasts that surprises at every turn.
Situated on the right bank of the Tejo river (Tagus), it is a city with a long history and one of the earliest cities in Western Europe. Along the centuries, Lisbon absorbed the cultures of the several civilizations that lived here and to this day you can see traces of these cultures in the resulting melting pot as you walk along it's streets. This is clear both in some of the Phoenician and Roman archeological sites but also above ground in the still visible roman theatre or the Moorish architecture of the neighborhood of Alfama.
Once the most important harbour in Europe after the arrival of Vasco da Gama in India in 1498. The city once again embraced the cultural influences arriving from the Far Orient and Africa.
This mixture of so many different cultures gives lisbon's neighboorhoods very distinctive characters from the old quarters of the city centre to the Belém area, where you find the 16th century monuments with their unique manueline style, to the 19th and 20th century neighbourhoods or to the modern Lisbon of Nations Park the city offers something for everyone.
Within a 30 to 45 minutes drive outside of Lisbon, you can have a completely different vision of Portugal. SINTRA, situated 30 Km from Lisbon is a mountain village that was declared World patrimony by UNESCO. The place that Lord Byron, once called the glorious Eden to describe the palaces and lush gardens of the region is home to two beautiful royal Palaces and it was once the holiday destination of kings and queens.
In the same area, we find a beautiful stretch of coast, where you can find PRAIA DAS MAÇÃS, AZENHAS DO MAR, ERICEIRA, CASCAIS and ESTORIL.
Lisbon is also the best base to explore the coast South of the city, with places like SESIMBRA, PALMELA and SETUBAL. Here you find three beautiful castles built by the first kings of Portugal, strategically situated to oversee the surrounding villages and city.
On the way to the South coast, explore the unique Arrabida Mountain with it’s caractheristic vegetation on the heart of the Blue Coast.
Travelling 1 hour North of Lisbon, we find the sanctuary of FÁTIMA, a place of pilgrimage to catholics from all over the world, that commemorate the appearance of Our Lady to 3 children (Lúcia, Francisco and Jacinta) in 1917. In the sanctuary you can visit the Basilica, Chapel of Apparitions and Church of Santissima Trindade.
In the same region find the beautiful walled mediaval town of ÓBIDOS where you can walk along the streets with the typical white houses. Region of the impressive monasteries of ALCOBAÇA and BATALHA or the fishing village of NAZARÉ.
